Khmer New Year 2024

Khmer New Year, or Choul Chnam Thmey, is the most significant celebration in Cambodia, marking a time of happiness, family, and spiritual renewal. As the country welcomes the year 2567 in the Buddhist calendar, Phnom Penh transforms into a hub of festivities, particularly at the historic Wat Phnom. The festival, which spans from April 13 to April 16, sees Cambodians engaging in various traditional activities. Water splashing is a central part of the celebrations, where people playfully sprinkle water on one another, symbolizing purification and the washing away of the old year’s misfortunes. The water festival aspect is particularly prominent on the last day, known as Leung Sakk, when the celebratory mood reaches its peak. People of all ages engage in playful water fights, sometimes adding fragrant talcum powder to the mix, which adds to the festive atmosphere and fosters a sense of community and shared happiness.
